Drilling Engineering

Drilling engineering is a core capability at IPT, with our engineers leading the cost estimating, planning, design, and execution of complex drilling operations across oil and gas, carbon storage, natural gas storage, solution mining, geothermal, hydrogen, and wastewater disposal wells. Our technical approach is built around industry-leading practices that ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions to drill into subsurface reservoirs.
Key areas of expertise begin with well planning and engineering design, utilizing DrillPlan software, including well location selection, trajectory optimization (vertical, directional, or horizontal), casing and cementing programs, wellbore stability analysis, pore pressure and fracture gradient prediction, drill string design, torque and drag modeling, hydraulic performance, and anti-collision planning for multi-well pad operations. Our engineering team supports optimal mud selection and maintenance—whether water, oil, or synthetic-based—alongside hydraulic modeling, pressure management, and lost circulation mitigation. In Bit and BHA design, we optimize tools based on lithology, mechanical performance, and ROP, while incorporating Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS), MWD/LWD, and vibration control technologies, where necessary. Cost estimation (AFEs) can be provided for specific well program and performance optimization when designing and executing well plans are supported by detailed analytics, KPI tracking, and best practice implementation to reduce non-productive time (NPT).
In directional drilling and geosteering, IPT integrates real-time survey data and downhole measurements to stay precisely within the target reservoir, while collaborating with subsurface teams for high-precision reservoir navigation. Our engineers are experts in pressure and well control, designing and executing shut-in and kill procedures, reviewing BOP systems, and advanced drilling techniques such as Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) and Underbalanced Drilling (UBD), particularly in HPHT environments.
We also ensure our well plans are in full compliance with environmental and regulatory standards. We select rigs based on well profile, load requirements, lost time and performance review, and operational environment. In addition, IPT can oversee all aspects of field execution, vender selection and MSA contracting, logistics, and cost control during operations.
IPT, during field execution, uses real-time data, leveraged through downhole and surface sensors to adjust drilling parameters dynamically, avoid problems, and drive continuous improvement.
Our teams are highly skilled in troubleshooting downhole issues like stuck pipe, lost circulation, and wellbore collapse, and we maintain robust risk management protocols, including contingency plans for sidetracks, fishing operations, and well abandonment scenarios. HAZID/HAZOP assessments and developing risk matrices with corresponding proactive solutions are standard across our planning process. Additionally, we maintain strict regulatory and environmental compliance, addressing emissions, permitting, air quality and sustainability through rig electrification review and/or waste minimization strategies.
